Jennie Garth may be reprising her role as the stylish Kelly Taylor on the new 90210, but earlier this year, looks were the last thing on her mind.
“I had this six months of hell,” the actress, 36, tells PEOPLE. “I had a sick daughter and then my father passed away, so there was a six month period in my life when I didn’t think about my looks or my weight or my body or anything.”
Fresh off her stint on Dancing With The Stars – and toned from months of 8-hour-a-day dance practices – Garth suddenly faced every mother’s worst nightmare. Her 5-year-old daughter Lola, “got very sick and we didn’t know what was wrong with her,” says Garth, who has three girls with husband Peter Facinelli. “I was basically locked in a closet with her for three months.”
Leaving all vanity behind, “I didn’t exercise or eat healthy,” she adds. “I had been a 27 in my jeans after Dancing With the Stars and I was so excited. But it really went back quickly. I definitely gained inches and a size.”
Finally, doctors were able to diagnose her daughter’s ailment. “It turned out to be a form of JRA [Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis] and we treated her and it’s in remission,” says Garth. “It was tough, but she’s better now.”

Just in case you ever check this site. When I was 17, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. For 2 years I took medication before my mom convinced me to look further into the situation.. It turns out I have celiac disease (allergic to gluten: a protein found in wheat) and several other food allergies (dairy, etc). Within a month of making my diet gluten-free, the inflammation in my feet, hands and stomach had resided. Within a year, my digestive system had fully recovered and my energy, etc. was improving.
I just wanted to say something in case no one had mentioned the role of food allergies (especially to gluten) in symptoms that appear to be autoimmune diseases (Rheumatoid Arthritis!!). The awareness and education is increasing, but I’m still amazed at how few doctors test for food allergies before diagnosing people with debilitating, life-long diseases/disorders. In my case, the medication that I was prescribed would have eventually caused permenent joint damage because it reduced the inflammation in my joints, but that swelling is the bodies natural defense to protect the joint from attack. With a food allergy, the body recognizes the allergin as foreign debris, without the protection of inflammation, this debris continues to damage the joints. Of the 3 arthritis specialists I went to for several years, none of them ever mentioned the possibility that food allegies can cause joint inflammation. This was almost 10 years ago, so doctor’s may be more aware of this now. All it takes is a food allergy blood test to confirm whether this could be the case. Only 1 in 4 people are thought to be diagnosed properly with this. Gluten-allergies can also manifest in learning disorders and brain damage. The Celiac Disease Foundation is a good place to learn more.
It sounds like you have everything under control and I only write this in case it may help. For me, it has changed my life. Regardless, I wish you the best!
Dear Jennie and Lola,
I’ve had JRA for 39 years and I’m 43.
It’s so scary when your little angel is sick and you don’t know why. I’m so glad that she’s in remission. The earlier the diagnosis the better! I’m sending positive thoughts and prayers your way!!!!!!!!!!!!! Write if you need any support!
Susan
Dear Jennie and Lola,
So glad you found the JRA so quickly got it in to remission.
Please consider becoming involved. Ask your fans to get involved.
I have a 7 yr. old who at age 4 was dignosed with JRA. So far no remission for her. She has been on NSAID’S, DMRAD’s, and now is on Biologic. All these meds. are scary. But still no remission, people need to know that there is not always a quick remission to this diease.
There are 300.000 children in the U.S with arthritis, we have states that don’t even have peds. rhuematogist to help these kids.
There are so many people who don’t even know that Kids Get Arthritis Too!
Wow do I know how you feel. Mydaughter at age 4 was also diagnosed with JRA after a month of thinking she fractured her ankle and keeping her in a cast for 3 weeks in Flordias heat. After 1 year she is in clinical remission. What a long road we are in and alot of medication which she takes in stride. She does better then me I am always worried about germs and her getting hurt on the playgrounds and so forth. It is great for you to share your story with the world. I would sometimes feel like she is so young and why us. But you know what these little girls are tough cookies. I would love for you to keep us posted on her process. By the way I am a huge fan. I will continue to pray for our daughters.

So we got Shannen Doherty to come back as Brenda but just as we love seeing her she is leaving. Dont know if I can speak for everyone when I say, she is mostly why I watch the new 90210. She has expressed that she will do what WE the fans want her to do. If you want to see Shannen continue as Brenda Walsh please sign the petition. We missed her and its so good to have her back, lets keep it like that. Keep Brenda, she is 90210!!!!
Jennie - I am the mother of an 11 yr old son who also has a form of JRA. Juvenile Psoriatic Arthritis. When I read the article about Lola, it made me feel like the public is not being informed accurately about JRA. This isn’t a disease that puts you through 6 months of hell and then everything is magically better. As a celebrity who is being open about this disease, it would be really beneficial to relay all the facts of this disease. The pulblic needs to become more aware of this.
